Cracking open Hatch

by Sandy Hunter

Visual effects designer/digital artist Deak Ferrand and visual effects producer Cheryl Bainum have launched Hatch, an independent Los Angeles based studio.

Ferrand start Hatch after leaving post company R!OT. The new studio aims to design and produce digital effects for films, TV, spots and interactive jobs, all via Ferrand's specializations in digital matte painting, compositing and computer graphics. In particular, Hatch specializes in creating 3D matte paintings allowing cameras near-complete freedom of movement.

Ferrand has worked as a designer and/or painter on features including "Titus Andronicus," "Mystery Men," "What Dreams May Come" and "X-Men." He and Bainum have worked together since 1995. Currently, Ferrand is working as a visual effects designer/supervisor and matte painter on "The Scorpion King" and "Blade 2." Ferrand was also a matte painter on "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship Of The Rings."

Ferrand, a native of Geneva, Switzerland, began his career with Buzz Image Group, Montreal. While in Montreal he studied Softimage and then moved (with Bainum) to Los Angeles to set up Buzz F/X in that city. In 1997, Buzz was picked up by Pacific Ocean Post, which went on to merge with R!OT.
